Rocking Boat Assembly Instructions

You should have the following parts:

A - 2 Side panels
B - 1 Large step
C - 4 Small steps
D - 1 Dowel
E - Parts bag containing glue, screws and hex wrench

Before you start.

Please read these instructions completely and be sure that you understand them before proceeding with assembly.

The joints between the steps and the sides are glued and screwed together.  Use the supplied glue to insure adequate strength in the joints.  It may appear that the screws will hold the joints by themselves, but over time the joint will loosen and fail if not glued.  The supplied glue is very thick so that it won't not run out of the slots.  In order to speed assembly, close the glue bottle between uses and set it upside down on the cap.  This will keep the thick glue at the cap end of the bottle.  When completed, you should have a large amount of leftover glue.

It will be helpful if you have someone to assist you. Partially assembled, the boat is very awkward to handle.

The plywood has a top and a bottom side.  Arrows have been marked on the ends of each step and inside the slots.  The unit should be assembled with all of the arrows pointing in the same direction.  This will insure a consistent appearance.

Step One:  Attach steps to one side.

Run a bead of glue down the bottom of the long slot in one side panel (A).  The glue bead should be about 1/8" in diameter.

Insert the large step (B) into the slot and secure using two screws.  Any glue that squeezes out of the slot can be removed with a damp rag.  If you get a lot of glue squeeze out, use less glue in the remaining slots.  Ideally, you want to use as much glue as possible with out getting a lot of squeeze out.

Attach the 4 small steps (C) and the Dowel (D) in the same way.  Stand the unit up on its side when done.

Step Two:  Attach the other side.

Apply glue to all five slots and the dowel hole.  Place it on top inserting the steps and dowel in the openings.  Secure with 11 more screws and set the unit down on the floor.  Carefully check all surfaces for any excess glue or drips and remove with a damp rag.

Rinse out the rag and check your clothes for glue.

Step Three:  Wait.

Allow the glue to dry for at least a day before using the boat.

Care.

The boat has been finished with a very light coating of polyurethane, just enough to penetrate the wood fibers, but not so much as to form a plastic film.  It should be resistant to most dirt, and can be cleaned with a damp cloth.  However, it is not waterproof.  Prolonged exposure to water, or extreme dampness, will damage the finish and possibly the wood.  The boat is suitable for temporary use outdoors, as long as it's not exposed to the elements or left on damp ground.
