As you know, shipping to Alaska and Hawaii is expensive.  A nature table going by FedEx would cost almost as much as the table itself, as their service to these locations is by air only.  Therefore, I use USPS Parcel Post or when possible priority mail. 

I normally ship nature tables with the base fully assembled and the top inverted over it.  This keeps the final box size just under 108" length+girth.  For USPS, the box size must be under 84" to keep the cost down.  The only way to do this is to ship the base as a kit.  Assembling the base will require gluing several joints and clamping until the glue dries.  There's no need for special clamps.  A length of rope and a stick to twist it tight will work.  A ratchiting cargo tie-down, available at most hardware stores for about $8, is the best solution. 

The added shipping costs below represent the difference between my average shipping cost for an item and what the USPS rate calculator says for shipping that same item to Alaska or Hawaii.  This is all based on a "typical" order.  I have to admit that the numbers are little more than guesses.  I've only shipped a few orders to Alaska and Hawaii and each is different. 

So, here is how I plan to handle it:  I will assemble your order and then use the FedEx website to determine the actual shipping cost to my former home near Chicago.  That's about average from here.  I will then take the package to the USPS and ship it.  The difference between FedEx and USPS is the extra shipping that will be charged.  (Add $4.50 to this number if the non-AK/HI merchandise total is under $50.)  If the added AK/HI shipping is greater than this amount by $1 I will refund the difference.  On the other hand, if I've failed to estimate high enough, then I'll cover it.  Think of it this way:  Your total order will cost no more than what is shown at checkout, possibly less. 

I truely regret the complexity of all this.  I've tried to maintain a shipping included policy, but orders shipped to Alaska and Hawaii would be serious money loosers if I didn't do something.  These procedures are my best effort, within the technical limitations of PayPal, to recover my costs in a fair manner. 

Please note that there is no additional AK/HI shipping for items ordered from the Butterfly Painting section of this site.  These items are so small and light that they almost fly on their own.
